2026 China-Cambodia Film & Cultural Exchange Week | China-Cambodia Film Restoration Technology Lecture Held at Fuyao University of Science and Technology
As a key professional event of the 2026 China-Cambodia Film & Cultural Exchange Week (Fuzhou Station), the China-Cambodia Film Restoration Technology Seminar successfully concluded at Fuyao University of Science and Technology on July 3. Centering on the protection of cross-border film heritage and digital film restoration technologies, the event gathered government officials, technical experts, film creators, university teachers and students from both countries. Serving as a bridge of cinematic culture, it promotes technical exchange, resource sharing and in-depth industrial cooperation between the Chinese and Cambodian film industries.
Supported and guided by authoritative institutions of China and Cambodia, and jointly hosted by the Cambodian Asian Film Festival Organizing Committee and Fuzhou Film Festival Co., Ltd., the seminar serves as a vital professional platform for bilateral film and cultural exchanges. The event brought together distinguished guests, including core officials from Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, leaders from the National Film Administration of China and the China Film Archive, as well as senior restoration specialists and young Chinese directors.
The seminar conducted in-depth discussions on four core themes: cutting-edge digital film restoration technologies, collaborative protection of cross-border film heritage, joint training of professional talents, and long-term industrial cooperation. Featuring keynote presentations and restored classic film screenings, the event facilitated multi-dimensional exchanges covering technical practice, industrial planning and film creation, integrating professional rigor with practical value.
During the keynote session, Li Tao, Head of the AI Restoration Laboratory at the China Film Archive, systematically introduced the full workflow of domestic digital film restoration, elaborated on innovative applications of AI technology in fading correction, scratch removal and audio restoration of old films, and analyzed existing industrial challenges while proposing standardized solutions. Cheap Sovichea, official of Cambodia's Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, presented Cambodia's policies and medium-to-long-term development plans for film heritage protection, and put forward cooperation proposals on cross-border film archive exchange and joint film restoration projects. Liu Xiaoyang, a young Chinese director, interpreted the profound humanistic and artistic value of film restoration from a creative perspective, noting that the restoration and cross-border screening of classic films facilitate mutual learning and innovative inspiration among young filmmakers from both countries.
Following the keynote speeches, attendees watched the high-definition restored version of the classic film Zhang Ga the Soldier Boy. The refined visuals and fully restored audio vividly demonstrated the power of digital restoration in preserving cinematic heritage and conveyed the cultural mission of film restoration.
The seminar has established a regular exchange platform for policy communication, technical sharing and talent cultivation between the two film industries, further consolidating the foundation of bilateral people-to-people and cultural bonds. Guest speakers spoke highly of the outcomes of the event. Li Tao expressed the hope to deepen bilateral technical collaboration and joint research, optimize AI restoration application scenarios, unify industrial restoration standards, and support the professional and efficient preservation and inheritance of vintage film resources. Hong Li, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of Cambodia Asian Film Festival , anticipated sustained normalized cooperation including technical exchanges, talent visits and joint film screenings to stimulate cultural innovation and drive high-quality development of the China-Cambodia film industry.
Moving forward, China and Cambodia will further deepen cooperation in joint film heritage protection, technical exchanges, youth talent training and cross-border film screenings, continuously explore the cultural value of film art, and write a new chapter of friendly cultural exchanges between the two countries.
