Congratulations again on your film winning the Best Original Score Award under the “Golden Romduol Award” at the 3rd Cambodia Asian Film Festival. How did you feel when you learned about the win, and what does this award mean to you?

Lê Thanh Tâm:

“I am utterly delighted to receive such a prestigious award on foreign soil. The moment I laid eyes on this exquisitely crafted trophy, my excitement intensified immensely. I will cherish it dearly as a precious keepsake in my collection of accolades.

For creators, awards are never the ultimate goal, yet they stand as profound recognition. I have always centered my attention on the work itself, prioritizing whether the music can faithfully convey the narrative's emotions and resonate with audiences, rather than fixating excessively on award outcomes. This victory thus came as a wonderful surprise. It not only recognizes my musical composition work but also proves that my creations transcend cultural boundaries, earning dual affirmation from industry professionals and general viewers alike. This validation carries extraordinary meaning for me.”

The female lead performs numerous songs throughout the film, with the eponymous theme track A Fragile Flower delivered with vastly contrasting emotional tones at different points of the story. When guiding the vocalist during recording sessions, how did you strike a balance between authentic emotional delivery and vocal technique?

Lê Thanh Tâm:

“This is a fascinating question. Ms. Nhật Hạ performed all vocal tracks sung by the female protagonist in the film.

Beyond performing on screen as the iconic singer Lệ Khánh, Nhật Hạ also co-wrote the screenplay and curated all musical numbers for the production. The film is adapted from the true-life story of late legendary Vietnamese singer Ngọc Lan, who was a close personal friend of Nhật Hạ. No one understands Ngọc Lan's vocal style better than her, nor is anyone more adept at shaping songs to match the character's inner state and recreating the sonic texture of the era. Fluent in French, English and other languages, she also provided invaluable support for the film's cross-cultural storytelling.”

Turning to the musical composition itself, the core challenge lay in completely reimagining the original songs with arrangements vastly distinct from their initial iterations. These tracks were not standalone pieces; they were crafted to drive narrative progression, requiring the vocalist to steer each number into new emotional territories. To achieve this, I held extensive creative discussions with Nhật Hạ. At times, we stripped back technical flourishes to let raw emotion take precedence; at other moments, we leaned into full-bodied, impassioned vocal delivery to showcase protagonist Thạch Thảo's talent and inner world.

A particularly meaningful layer of context: I am based in Vietnam, while Nhật Hạ resides in the United States. Her transnational vocal performance mirrors the film's central theme of Vietnamese-American cultural fusion. Though we never collaborated side-by-side in the same recording studio, our shared artistic vision and creative synergy yielded a final result that exceeded all expectations, and we are both immensely proud of the finished work.

A triangular relationship forms the core narrative of the film. Did you design exclusive musical motifs or melodic progressions for the three central characters — Sơn, Yvonne and Thạch Thảo? How did you use music to differentiate their personas and mirror their shifting emotional states?

Lê Thanh Tâm:

“I did not compose fixed, exclusive theme melodies for each of the three roles. Instead, I relied on the emotional tension of the background score to distinguish their unique identities and underscore their evolving inner lives.

For Thạch Thảo: Her musical foundation revolves around youth and romance. Even during her brightest, most joyful scenes, I wove subtle undertones of melancholy into the melodies. This echoes her tragic fate as a fragile bloom and plants narrative foreshadowing for later emotional turns.

For Yvonne: I leaned into music that emphasizes her sharp fashion sensibility and distinct personality. Edgier rhythmic patterns and orchestration hint at her underlying suspicion and inner turmoil, lending greater depth to her characterization.

For Sơn: His emotional landscape is the most layered, tangled between romantic conflict and pure passion for music. I composed several vibrant, fervent melodic passages that capture him at his most unguarded and joyful — moments when he devotes himself to advancing Thạch Thảo's musical career, an often-overlooked highlight of his character.”

Q4:

A Fragile Flower is a Vietnamese-American feature film you produced in the United States. Were there any musical segments that hit creative roadblocks during production? How did you draw inspiration and resolve these challenges?

Lê Thanh Tâm:

“Two major obstacles emerged throughout the creative process. The first was remote cross-border collaboration with Ms. Nhật Hạ, who was based in the U.S. The second was reconciling divergent musical tastes between Vietnamese-American audiences in the U.S. and domestic Vietnamese viewers — particularly long-time fans of the original songs, who carried complex expectations for the reimagined arrangements.

Rather than compromise or cater to rigid preconceptions to resolve the second hurdle, I chose to break free from established frameworks. I fully reorchestrated the original tracks, preserving their core emotional essence while reintroducing them in entirely new musical forms. This approach breathed new vitality into vintage songs and enabled seamless integration with the film's original score. Long instrumental cues flow naturally into vocal numbers, while song codas transition fluidly into new scoring passages, crafting an uninterrupted immersive auditory experience.

The final outcome proved deeply rewarding. Both Vietnamese-American overseas audiences and domestic Vietnamese viewers embraced and enjoyed the rearranged tracks, perceiving them as refreshing original works. This reinforced my conviction that genuine musical emotion transcends divides in culture and aesthetic preference.”

This film has brought wider attention to Vietnamese-language music and traditional folk instruments. Will you continue to pursue cross-cultural musical creation moving forward? Could you share any upcoming creative projects?

Lê Thanh Tâm:

“I would first like to clarify one point: I did not deliberately overcrowd the score with traditional folk instruments for this film. My goal was to craft music that retains the unique tonal character of Vietnamese sound while embracing contemporary musical aesthetics, striking a balance between traditional heritage and modern expression.

In Vietnam, my creative signature has long centered on fusing traditional folk instruments with modern composition. I have produced numerous instrumental works blending electronic music, orchestral arrangements and indigenous Vietnamese instrumentation. I intend to continue exploring this creative direction and unlocking more possibilities for cross-cultural musical storytelling.

Looking ahead to upcoming projects, I will serve as composer for another feature film. I typically dedicate myself to only one cinematic score per year to guarantee meticulous, refined craftsmanship. This new production centers on lion and dragon dances, a folk tradition shared by Vietnam and China, and its soundtrack will integrate corresponding cultural motifs and instrumental textures. Beyond film scoring, I will keep expanding my footprint within Vietnam's domestic music industry: I am preparing a new studio album and planning a series of offline live concerts to bring more cross-genre, fusion musical works to audiences.”
